My website designer is great. I have actually input all my products and maintain my website using their technology with no background in any form...

My ad is ruined!

In a publication I recently flicked through I noticed a few issues with content being cut off, and the folds of pages going right through people’s faces and text.

To make sure this never happens to any of your advertising or printed material, keep the following in mind:

Keep all text at least 5mm from the trim edge

Make it 7-10mm for publications just to be on the safe side, with large print jobs like that you are always bound to get some inconsistent trims.

Keep faces and text well clear of the gutter (the fold)

If you material is running in across a DPS (Double Page Spread) in a publication that is Perfect Bound (glued, more commonly used in higher end magazines) keep all text and important foreground imagery 10mm from the centre of the DPS. This will ensure nothing gets lost in the gutter and readers won’t have to push the pages down hard to read parts of your text.

In a publication that is Saddle Stitched (stapled, more commonly used in newspapers and stand magazines) you can get away with 5mm from the centre of the DPS but that all depends on the amount of pages in the publication and the thickness of the paper. I’d suggest, play it safe and keep all important content 10mm from the fold of the page – you don’t want your text cut off or deformed model’s after all.

NOTE: Background imagery is usually fine to run across the gutter.
